1 And again: Listen, house of Israel, all of you who are broken off and driven out because of the wickedness of my people’s pastors, and all of you who are my people and are scattered abroad. Listen to me, you islands and you people from far away. The Lord has called me from birth; he called me when I was still in my mother.
1 And again: Hearken, O ye house of Israel, all ye that are broken off and are driven out because of the wickedness of the pastors of my people; yea, all ye that are broken off, that are scattered abroad, who are of my people, O house of Israel. Listen, O isles, unto me, and hearken ye people from far; the Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.
2 He has made my mouth sharp like a sword. He has hidden me in the shadow of his hand and made me into a polished arrow. He has hidden me in his quiver.
2 And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;
3 And he said to me, You are my servant, Israel, and I will be glorified in you.
3 And said unto me: Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.
4 Then I said, I have worked for nothing. I’ve used up all my strength for nothing and to no avail. My judgement is with the Lord, and my work is with my God.
4 Then I said, I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for naught and in vain; surely my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with my God.
5 The Lord has raised me from the womb to be his servant and to bring Jacob to him again. Even though Israel has not been gathered, I have been honored by the Lord, and God will give me strength.
5 And now, saith the Lord—that formed me from the womb that I should be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him—though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength.
6 And the Lord said, It is not enough that you should be my servant and restore the tribes of Jacob and restore the protected ones of Israel. I will also give you as a light to the Gentiles so that you can be my salvation for the whole world.
6 And he said: It is a light thing that thou shouldst be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel. I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the ends of the earth.
7 This is what the Lord—the Redeemer and holy One of Israel—says to him who people hate, who was hated by the nation, who is the servant of rulers: Kings will see and rise up, and princes will worship, because of the Lord who is faithful.
7 Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nations abhorreth, to servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful.
8 The Lord says, I have heard you at an acceptable time, you islands of the sea, and in a day of salvation I have helped you. I will protect you and give you my servant for a covenant of the people to establish the land and to inherit the desolate inheritances.
8 Thus saith the Lord: In an acceptable time have I heard thee, O isles of the sea, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee; and I will preserve thee, and give thee my servant for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages;
9 This is so that you can say to the prisoners, Come out, and to those that sit in darkness: Show yourselves. They will graze along the roads, and their pastures will be in all high places.
9 That thou mayest say to the prisoners: Go forth; to them that sit in darkness: Show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places.
10 They won’t be hungry or thirsty, and they will be protected from the heat and sun. The person who is merciful to them will lead them, and by the springs of water he will guide them.
10 They shall not hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heat nor the sun smite them; for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.
11 And I will turn my mountains into roads, and my highways will be exalted.
11 And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted.
12 And then, house of Israel, they will come from far awayósome from the north, some from the west, and some from the land of Sinim.
12 And then, O house of Israel, behold, these shall come from far; and lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.
13 Sing, you heavens, and be joyful, you earth. The feet of those in the east will be settled. Sing, you mountains, because they will no longer be hit. The Lord has comforted his people and will be merciful to those who have suffered.
13 Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; for the feet of those who are in the east shall be established; and break forth into singing, O mountains; for they shall be smitten no more; for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.
14 But Zion has said: The Lord has forsaken me and forgotten about meóbut the Lord will show that he hasn’t.
14 But, behold, Zion hath said: The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me—but he will show that he hath not.
15 Can a woman forget her nursing child and have no compassion on the child she gave birth to?
15 For can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee, O house of Israel.
16 I have engraved you on the palms of my hands. Your walls are in front of me continually.
16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.
17 Your children will go against those who destroyed you. Those that destroyed you will leave you.
17 Thy children shall make haste against thy destroyers; and they that made thee waste shall go forth of thee.
18 The Lord says, Lift up your eyes and look around you. All of your children are coming together and will come to you. As long as I live, you will wear them as ornaments and put them on like a bride does.
18 Lift up thine eyes round about and behold; all these gather themselves together, and they shall come to thee. And as I live, saith the Lord, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on even as a bride.
19 Your wastelands, empty places, and destroyed lands will be too small for their inhabitants. Those who swallowed you will be far away.
19 For thy waste and thy desolate places, and the land of thy destruction, shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants; and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away.
20 The children that you will have after you lost the first ones will say to you, This place is too crowded. Give me room to live.
20 The children whom thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the first, shall again in thine ears say: The place is too strait for me; give place to me that I may dwell.
21 Then you will say in your heart, Who fathered these children after seeing that I had lost mine and was barren, a captive, and a wanderer? Who raised them? I was alone. Where did these come from?
21 Then shalt thou say in thine heart: Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? And who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where have they been?
22 The Lord God said: I will give a signal to the Gentiles and raise my banner to the people. They will bring your sons in their arms, and your daughters will be carried on their shoulders.
22 Thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people; and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.
23 Kings will be your foster fathers and queens your nursing mothers. They will bow down to the earth in front of you and lick the dust off of your feet, and you will know that I am the Lord. Those that wait for me will not be ashamed.
23 And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers; they shall bow down to thee with their face towards the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord; for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.
24 Can the prey be taken from those who are mighty, or can the captives of a conquerer be freed?
24 For shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captives delivered?
25 But the Lord says than even the captives of the mighty will be taken away, and the prey of those who are terrible will be delivered. I will fight the person that fights with you, and I will save your children.
25 But thus saith the Lord, even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered; for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.
26 And I will feed the flesh of those who oppress you to themselves. They will get drunk from their own blood like they would from sweet wine. And all mankind will know that I, the Lord, am their Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; they shall be drunken with their own blood as with sweet wine; and all flesh shall know that I, the Lord, am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
