1 And now I, Nephi, proceed to give an account upon these plates of my proceedings, and my reign and ministry; wherefore, to proceed with mine account, I must speak somewhat of the things of my father, and also of my brethren.

1 И ныне я, Нефий, продолжаю излагать на этих листах повествование о своих деяниях, а также о своём правлении и служении; а потому, чтобы продолжить своё повествование, я должен сказать кое-что о делах моего отца, а также моих братьев.

2 For behold, it came to pass after my father had made an end of speaking the words of his dream, and also of exhorting them to all diligence, he spake unto them concerning the Jews—

2 Ибо вот, было так, что после того как мой отец закончил изрекать слова о своём сновидении, а также увещевать их ко всякому усердию, он заговорил с ними об иудеях:

3 That after they should be destroyed, even that great city Jerusalem, and many be carried away captive into Babylon, according to the own due time of the Lord, they should return again, yea, even be brought back out of captivity; and after they should be brought back out of captivity they should possess again the land of their inheritance.

3 Что после того как они будут истреблены, то есть тот великий город Иерусалим, и многие будут уведены пленёнными в Вавилон, в угодное Господу время они снова вернутся, да, то есть будут выведены из плена; и после того как они будут выведены из плена, они снова будут владеть землёй своего наследия.

4 Yea, even six hundred years from the time that my father left Jerusalem, a prophet would the Lord God raise up among the Jews—even a Messiah, or, in other words, a Savior of the world.

4 Да, именно по прошествии шестисот лет с того времени, как мой отец покинул Иерусалим, пророка воздвигнет Господь Бог среди иудеев – да, Мессию, или, иными словами, Спасителя мира.

5 And he also spake concerning the prophets, how great a number had testified of these things, concerning this Messiah, of whom he had spoken, or this Redeemer of the world.

5 И он говорил также о пророках, как много их свидетельствовало об этих событиях, касающихся этого Мессии, о Котором он говорил, или этого Искупителя мира.

6 Wherefore, all mankind were in a lost and in a fallen state, and ever would be save they should rely on this Redeemer.

6 А потому всё человечество было в потерянном и падшем состоянии и пребывало бы в нём всегда, если бы не уповало на этого Искупителя.

7 And he spake also concerning a prophet who should come before the Messiah, to prepare the way of the Lord—

7 И он говорил также о пророке, который придёт раньше Мессии, чтобы приготовить путь Господу.

8 Yea, even he should go forth and cry in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, and make his paths straight; for there standeth one among you whom ye know not; and he is mightier than I, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose. And much spake my father concerning this thing.

8 Да, именно он выйдет и возопит в пустыне: Приготовьте путь Господу и прямыми сделайте стези Ему; ибо стоит Некто среди вас, Кого вы не знаете; и Он сильнее, чем я; я недостоин развязать ремень обуви Его. И многое говорил мой отец об этом.

9 And my father said he should baptize in Bethabara, beyond Jordan; and he also said he should baptize with water; even that he should baptize the Messiah with water.

9 И мой отец сказал, что тот пророк будет крестить в Вифаваре за Иорданом; и он также сказал, что он будет крестить водой; а именно будет крестить водой Мессию.

10 And after he had baptized the Messiah with water, he should behold and bear record that he had baptized the Lamb of God, who should take away the sins of the world.

10 И после того как он крестит водой Мессию, он увидит и засвидетельствует, что крестил он Агнца Божьего, Который удалит грехи мира.

11 And it came to pass after my father had spoken these words he spake unto my brethren concerning the gospel which should be preached among the Jews, and also concerning the dwindling of the Jews in unbelief. And after they had slain the Messiah, who should come, and after he had been slain he should rise from the dead, and should make himself manifest, by the Holy Ghost, unto the Gentiles.

11 И было так: после того как мой отец сказал эти слова, он говорил моим братьям о Евангелии, которое будет проповедуемо среди иудеев, а также о вырождении иудеев в неверии. И после того как они убьют Мессию, Который придёт, и после того как Он будет убит, Он восстанет из мёртвых и силой Духа Святого явит Себя иноверцам.

12 Yea, even my father spake much concerning the Gentiles, and also concerning the house of Israel, that they should be compared like unto an olive tree, whose branchesshould be broken off and should be scattered upon all the face of the earth.

12 Да, воистину много говорил мой отец об иноверцах, а также о доме Израилевом, что он будет уподоблен оливковому дереву, ветви которого будут отломлены и разбросаны по всему лицу земли.

13 Wherefore, he said it must needs be that we should be led with one accord into the land of promise, unto the fulfilling of the word of the Lord, that we should be scattered upon all the face of the earth.

13 А потому, сказал он, необходимо, чтобы мы были все вместе ведомы в землю обетования во исполнение слова Господнего, дабы мы были рассеяны по всему лицу земли.

14 And after the house of Israel should be scattered they should be gathered together again; or, in fine, after the Gentiles had received the fulness of the Gospel, the natural branches of the olive tree, or the remnants of the house of Israel, should be grafted in, or come to the knowledge of the true Messiah, their Lord and their Redeemer.

14 И после того как дом Израилев будет рассеян, он будет снова собран воедино; или, иначе говоря, после того как иноверцы получат полноту Евангелия, природные ветви оливкового дерева, или остатки дома Израилева, будут привиты, или придут к познанию истинного Мессии, их Господа и их Искупителя.

15 And after this manner of language did my father prophesy and speak unto my brethren, and also many more things which I do not write in this book; for I have written as many of them as were expedient for me in mine other book.

15 И такими словами отец мой пророчествовал и говорил моим братьям, а также и о многом другом, о чём я не пишу в этой книге; ибо о том я написал в другой своей книге столько, сколько мне было необходимо.

16 And all these things, of which I have spoken, were done as my father dwelt in a tent, in the valley of Lemuel.

16 И всё это, о чём я сказал, произошло в то время, как мой отец пребывал в шатре, в долине Лемуила.

17 And it came to pass after I, Nephi, having heard all the words of my father, concerning the things which he saw in a vision, and also the things which he spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received by faith on the Son of God—and the Son of God was the Messiah who should come—I, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God unto all those who diligently seek him, as well in times of old as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men.

17 И было так: после того как я, Нефий, услышал все слова моего отца о том, что он видел в видении, а также о том, что он изрёк силой Духа Святого, получив эту силу верой в Сына Божьего – а Сын Божий был тем Мессией, Который должен прийти, – я, Нефий, также пожелал увидеть и услышать, и познать это силой Духа Святого, Который есть дар Божий всем тем, кто усердно ищут Его, как в древние времена, так и в то время, когда Он явит Себя детям человеческим.

18 For he is the same yesterday, today, and forever; and the way is prepared for all men from the foundation of the world, if it so be that they repent and come unto him.

18 Ибо Он тот же вчера, сегодня и вовеки; и приготовлен путь для всех людей от основания мира, если будет так, что они покаются и придут к Нему.

19 For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in these times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come; wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round.

19 Ибо тот, кто усердно ищет, найдёт; и тайны Божьи будут открыты ему силой Духа Святого в нынешние времена, как и во времена древние; и как во времена древние, так и во времена грядущие; а потому путь Господний – один вечный круг.

20 Therefore remember, O man, for all thy doings thou shalt be brought into judgment.

20 Поэтому помни, о человек: за все свои дела ты будешь приведён на суд.

21 Wherefore, if ye have sought to do wickedly in the days of your probation, then ye are found unclean before the judgment-seat of God; and no unclean thing can dwell with God; wherefore, ye must be cast off forever.

21 А потому если вы пытались поступать нечестиво во дни вашего испытания, то признаны вы нечистыми перед судейским местом Бога; а ничто нечистое не может пребывать с Богом; и потому вы должны быть отвергнуты навеки.

22 And the Holy Ghost giveth authority that I should speak these things, and deny them not.

22 И Дух Святой даёт власть, чтобы я сказал всё это и не утаил.
